The pathway to reduce Emotionally Based School Avoidance
With the right support, our young people can reach their full potential
Together we can equip young people to succeed
The difference between non attendance and school avoidance
We’re failing our young people. Life is so different now to 20 years ago, but the techniques, structure and expectations we set for school haven’t caught up. Our young people have so much more to deal with than we did at their age and we need to work with them if we want them to succeed.
More than 1 in 5 children are persistently absent. But too often the young person is labelled as being difficult or obstructive. They’re the issue.
But that’s not how I see it.
Emotionally based school avoidance is a feeling where they’re physically, or emotionally unable to attend school. No matter how much they want to, there's something stopping them.
It’s up to us as the adults who care about them to equip them with the tools and support that will change their lives.
Our young people are the solution
It’s no good forcing young people to do something they don’t want. After all, many of these young people are nearing adulthood. Instead we need to give them the power to take control of their own situation.
We don’t need to give them a solution, we need to unlock the solution within them.
That’s what the Youth Professionals Understanding Emotionally Based School Avoidance is all about.
It’s a course designed for those youth professionals who see the damage caused by school and want to change things for the better.
With everything you need to run sessions in schools or other settings, from training to lesson plans to resources. You’re equipped with everything you need to work with struggling young people to turn their lives around.

Your trainer - Ange McMillan
I’m an accredited counsellor experienced in working with neurodivergent young people and their families.
I’m a trainer, coach and immersive technology in therapy and education researcher and have lived experience of homelessness, anxiety and trauma.
My passion is young people. I don’t believe in shaming young people, blaming parents or taking a cookie-cutter approach.
Instead we need to look at the root causes and work with our young people to make change and take control of their lives.
I want young people to thrive. I want to see them succeed and I truly believe the best way to do that is through equipping the people around them with the tools to pass on.
It all starts with a course
The issue of emotionally based school avoidance isn’t going away. It’s not something we can ignore any longer. But we also need to face up to the fact that existing strategies aren’t working.
This blended learning programme is the start of that.
It’ll give you the confidence, knowledge and framework to bring young people together and work with them, not preach to them. I’ve worked with young people, their families and service providers to create this course and I know it works.
The focus isn’t on blame or what’s happened in the past. It’s on reducing anxiety, learning coping strategies, building connections, and boosting self-esteem so we give our young people back their future.
With this course it’s not just one young person you can help, it’s any young person that needs your support to get back to school, back on track and back to their education.
This course is just the start.
